01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Lancia Aprilia Berlinetta by Carrozzeria Touring is a rare and refined example of Italian coachbuilding in the immediate post-war period, distinguished by its advanced construction techniques and shared body design lineage with high-profile contemporaries. Created circa 1947 and exhibited at both the Mostra della Carrozzeria Italiana in Milan (1947) and the Salon de l’Automobile in Paris (1949), this Berlinetta represents a distinct application of Touring’s postwar aerodynamic coupe design on a compact, technically advanced chassis. Based on the Lancia Aprilia, a model introduced in 1937 and praised for its narrow-angle V4 engine and four-wheel independent suspension, this special-bodied version was clothed by Carrozzeria Touring using the patented Superleggera construction system. The resulting coupe featured an aluminum body supported by a tubular steel framework, delivering both lightweight performance and structural rigidity. What sets this particular Berlinetta apart is its body design, which was not exclusive to the Aprilia. Touring had developed a versatile aerodynamic form in the postwar yearscharacterized by flowing, integrated fenders, a long and tapering fastback rear, minimal ornamentation, and refined proportionsthat it applied, with adaptation, to three distinct chassis. The Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Sport, including the Aerlux-roofed variants, and the British-built Bristol 401 both featured near-identical bodywork, making this Lancia Aprilia part of an informal trio of Touring-bodied Berlinettas united by design but diversified by mechanical character. The Berlinetta’s execution on the Aprilia chassis was particularly notable for its elegance at a smaller scale. While the Alfa offered six-cylinder power and the Bristol emphasized engineering precision, the Aprilia brought Lancia’s hallmark innovationcompact V4 engine, low weight, and independent suspensioninto a sleek, aerodynamically efficient grand touring form. The design was scaled and proportioned to the Aprilia’s dimensions with remarkable balance, retaining the same essential silhouette as its Alfa and Bristol siblings but with a character all its own. The car’s appearance at the 1947 Milan Mostra marked its public debut, where it stood as a testament to Italy’s design resilience and innovation in the early postwar years. Its later exhibition at the 1949 Paris Motor Show placed it on an international stage, affirming the global relevance of Touring’s design language and Lancia’s engineering sophistication.
