01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Autobianchi Primula Coupé II Serie was a two-door fastback variant introduced as part of the evolution of the Primula model line, produced under the direction of the Fiat Group. It was developed between 1967 and 1969 as a continuation of the earlier coupé version, which had been launched in 1965. The second series featured mechanical and cosmetic updates over its predecessor and remained in limited production until the cessation of the Primula range in 1970. The Primula was notable within the Fiat Group portfolio as the first vehicle to adopt a transverse front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout. The Coupé II Serie retained this configuration and was equipped with a four-cylinder in-line petrol engine mounted transversely at the front. The standard engine had a displacement of 1,221 cubic centimetres, producing approximately 65 horsepower. In the higher-performance Coupé S version, displacement increased to 1,438 cubic centimetres, delivering up to 75 horsepower. Both variants employed a four-speed manual transmission. The front suspension utilised independent McPherson struts with torsion bars, while the rear featured semi-trailing arms. Braking was by hydraulic drums on the standard model, with front discs on the Coupé S. The bodywork was a two-door coupé configuration with a sloping fastback profile. The design was attributed to Carrozzeria Touring, though executed under Autobianchi’s direct control in later series. The body was constructed in steel and featured frameless side windows, a low roofline, and simplified ornamentation. Interior accommodation was for four occupants, with folding rear seats and increased luggage capacity relative to the saloon variant. Production numbers for the Primula Coupé, across both series, are estimated at slightly over 3,500 units. Exact figures for the II Serie alone are not fully documented. The majority of units were delivered to the domestic Italian market, with limited export to select European countries. Chassis identification followed Fiat/Autobianchi serial conventions. The Autobianchi Primula Coupé II Serie represented a transitional model within the Fiat Group, combining advanced mechanical layout with stylistic differentiation. It served as an early example of front-wheel-drive architecture applied to a compact sporting coupé body, preceding similar applications in later Fiat and Lancia products.
