01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Isotta Fraschini 8C Monterosa Touring was one of the most ambitious Italian luxury car prototypes of the immediate postwar period. After the Second World War, Isotta Fraschini attempted to return to automobile production and re-establish itself as one of Europe’s great prestige marques. The company, founded in Milan in 1900 by Cesare Isotta and the Fraschini brothers Oreste, Antonio and Vincenzo, had built its reputation before the war with large, refined luxury cars such as the Tipo 8. The Monterosa was intended as its modern successor. Between 1947 and 1949, Isotta Fraschini built five prototypes of the 8C Monterosa, each with different coachwork by Italian bodybuilders including Touring, Zagato and Boneschi. Carrozzeria Touring built two examples: one with four-door bodywork and one two-door coupé. The car described here is chassis 05, the unique two-door coupé bodied by Touring. It used Isotta Fraschini’s unusual rear-engine layout, with the engine mounted behind the passenger compartment rather than at the front. The power unit was a newly developed 3.0-litre V8, designed by Aurelio Lampredi during his brief period at Isotta Fraschini. It produced around 115 hp. The chassis was designed by Fabio Rapi and allowed a claimed top speed of about 170 km/h, a remarkable figure for a luxurious four-seat car of the late 1940s. Touring’s bodywork followed the principles of its Superleggera design language: clean lines, balanced proportions and restrained detailing. The coupé had flowing wings, integrated headlamps, a compact roofline and a long 3,100 mm wheelbase, giving it presence without excessive heaviness. The Monterosa also included several unusual technical and interior features. The spare wheel was hidden beneath the radiator grille in a pull-out drawer, while luggage space was concealed behind the seats. The car also used Touring’s patented Aerlux sliding glass sunroof, giving the cabin a lighter feel. Inside, the instrumentation was highly unconventional: only the speedometer, rev counter and clock were visible to the driver, with the other instruments hidden until needed and indicated by a central warning lamp. Chassis 05 was first shown at the 1947 Paris Motor Show in green, then at the Milan Coachwork Exhibition the same year. It later appeared at the 1948 Geneva Motor Show, repainted black and with a revised front end. Despite its advanced engineering and elegant coachwork, the 8C Monterosa never reached series production. The project was too expensive for the difficult postwar market, and Isotta Fraschini could not turn it into a viable commercial car. Chassis 05 remained with Isotta Fraschini for many years before entering the Lopresto Collection. It was fully restored in 2017 and later presented at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, and partecipated at the 2026 Villa d’Este Concours d’Elegance.
