01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 SS Villa d’Este was produced between 1949 and 1952 as a limited-series grand tourer based on the 6C 2500 Super Sport chassis. Its bodywork was built by Carrozzeria Touring of Milan using the patented Superleggera system, which combined a tubular steel framework with lightweight aluminium panels. The design is credited to Federico Formenti, Touring’s chief stylist at the time, and reflects a transitional period in European automotive design with an emphasis on integrated forms, low rooflines, and streamlined profiles. The model derives its name from the 1949 Concorso d’Eleganza at Villa d’Este on Lake Como, where the car received the Gran Premio Referendum, awarded by popular vote. The vehicle was constructed on Alfa Romeo’s short-wheelbase Super Sport chassis and fitted with a 2,443 cc inline six-cylinder engine with dual overhead camshafts and triple Weber carburettors. This configuration produced approximately 110 horsepower and enabled a top speed of around 165 km/h. A four-speed manual transmission was standard, and suspension consisted of independent front arms and a rear live axle with coil springs. Braking was handled by hydraulic drums at all four corners. Production was limited to approximately 36 examples of the closed coupé, with a small number of cabriolets also built. Each unit was customised according to the client’s specifications, resulting in variations in colour schemes, interiors, and detail trim. Replaced by the 1900 SS, the Villa d’Este was one of the final models from Alfa Romeo to be individually commissioned and hand-built in the traditional coachbuilt manner before the company transitioned to more standardised mass production techniques in the following decade. The 6C 2500 SS Villa d’Este is recognised for its design significance within both Alfa Romeo’s postwar portfolio and the broader history of Italian automotive styling. It is frequently cited in studies of coachbuilding and mid-century design, and examples are regularly exhibited at concours d’elegance and museum collections. Due to its limited production, bespoke character, and association with prominent design and engineering figures, it remains a reference point in discussions of 20th-century grand touring cars.
