01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Alfa Romeo 2000 was presented in 1957 at the Turin Motor Show, with 4-door, 6-seater saloon Berlina body. Production started in 1958, and the car was available as Berlina or Spider convertible. In 1960, the Sprint coupé was added. The 2000 Berlina had gearbox operated via column-mounted shifter making space for three people in front. The two grand touring versions had the gear lever located in floor, and a higher output engine. Until 1961, when 2+2-seater became available, the Spider was a pure two-seater.  The Alfa Romeo 2000 Spider stands as a distinctive chapter in the marque’s history, born out of a collaboration between Alfa Romeo management and Carrozzeria Touring. Tasked with crafting the open version of the successor to the renowned 1900, Carrozzeria Touring responded with a prototype that embodied the essence of sportiness and elegance. The initial design, a 2-seater with a Superleggera body, was met with approval. However, practical considerations led to modifications aimed at keeping the price within reach. The fittings underwent a simplification process, opting for vinyl instead of leather in the interiors and choosing steel wheels over spokes. Notably, the Superleggera system, a trademark of Touring, was replaced with a steel monocoque body—a first for the esteemed coachbuilder. The design of the Alfa Romeo 2000 Spider was attributed to Rodolfo Bonetto, a departure from Touring’s usual practice of in-house design. Bonetti’s contribution added a fresh perspective to the project, resulting in a harmonious blend of classic Alfa Romeo styling cues with modern sensibilities. While cost-cutting measures were implemented to broaden accessibility, the Alfa Romeo 2000 Spider remained a testament to Italian automotive craftsmanship. Its sleek lines and dynamic proportions echoed the sporting heritage of Alfa Romeo, a brand synonymous with passion and performance. The Alfa Romeo 2000 Spider, with its Superleggera origins adapted for wider appeal, encapsulates a juncture where practicality met design prowess. Beyond the compromises made for affordability, this Spider retained a distinctive charm, symbolizing an era of evolution for both Alfa Romeo and Carrozzeria Touring.
