01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Spada Codatronca Monza is the barchetta version of the Spada Codatronca, developed by Spada Vetture Sport and presented in 2011. It derived from the closed Codatronca TS, introduced in 2008, but replaced the coupé body with an open, very low windscreen configuration designed for a more extreme driving experience. The project was created by Paolo Spada, Ercole Spada and Domiziano Boschi of Spadaconcept. The name Codatronca refers to the truncated-tail aerodynamic principle associated with Ercole Spada’s work for Zagato, especially models such as the Alfa Romeo Giulia TZ. The Monza version added a more direct link to Italian racing culture, with the name referring to the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza. The car used a front-mid-mounted 7.0-litre V8 derived from the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 LS7 engine. The unit was developed by Italtecnica and fitted with two Rotrex centrifugal superchargers and intercoolers. Output was quoted at around 720 hp, with torque figures reported between 920 and 950 Nm. Power was sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox. The structure consisted of an aluminium tubular chassis with carbon-fibre and composite body panels. The dry weight was approximately 1,180 kg. Claimed performance included 0–100 km/h in about 3 seconds and a top speed of around 335 km/h. The car was fitted with Brembo brakes, 19-inch wheels and very wide performance tyres. The Codatronca Monza remained a one-off in this specification. A barchetta version of the Codatronca was offered on request, but no regular production run is documented. The Monza is therefore best described as a unique open development of the Codatronca theme, combining American V8 power, Italian design and the aerodynamic coda tronca concept.
