01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Fiat 600 Primula by Carrozzeria Scioneri was a one-off prototype coupé constructed in 1963 on the mechanical basis of the Fiat 600 D. It was conceived as a stylistic exercise intended to explore a more refined, compact two-door configuration built upon the established mechanical architecture of the 600 series. The vehicle was presented to the public at the 1963 Turin Motor Show but was not developed into a production series. The platform employed was derived from the Fiat 600 D, which had entered production in 1960. The car retained the standard rear-mounted, water-cooled inline four-cylinder engine of 767 cubic centimetres. This unit was rated at approximately 29 horsepower and was mated to a four-speed manual gearbox. The layout featured rear-wheel drive. Suspension consisted of independent front wheels with a transverse leaf spring and a rear swing-axle with coil springs. Braking was carried out by hydraulic drum units at all four corners. The coachwork was executed under the direction of Carrozzeria Scioneri of Savigliano, a firm known for limited-series and one-off modifications to Fiat base models. The design was attributed to Giovanni Michelotti and featured a low roofline, smooth fastback proportions, and revised front and rear treatments. The body panels were unique to this prototype and included a modified grille, integrated headlamps, and a tapered tail section. Despite these changes, the chassis dimensions and structural elements remained consistent with the Fiat 600 D donor vehicle. Only one example of the Fiat 600 Primula was constructed. No evidence of subsequent production exists, and no further chassis have been attributed to the model. The car remained within Scioneri’s possession following its debut and is believed to have remained unregistered and unused for road purposes. Chassis identification numbers are not publicly documented, and the vehicle’s current location is unknown. The Primula represents a brief exploration of compact coupé design within the context of early 1960s Italian coachbuilding. It illustrates Scioneri’s capacity to execute a complete body style revision on a mass-production platform and reflects contemporary interest in elevating utilitarian mechanical bases through bespoke design proposals. The model remains singular in the historical record.
