01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Alfa Romeo 164 Cabriolet envisioned by Pininfarina under the direction of Enrico Fumia in 1985 was a stunning creation that captured the imagination of automotive enthusiasts. Fumia’s vision brought forth an elegant and dynamic interpretation of the Alfa Romeo 164, showcasing Pininfarina’s design prowess and creativity. The Alfa Romeo 164 Cabriolet, along with its coupe and station wagon counterparts, represented a bold departure from the traditional sedan design. Fumia’s design language infused the Alfa Romeo 164 with a sense of sportiness and sophistication, elevating its aesthetic appeal and setting it apart from its contemporaries. Although the Cabriolet version never made it to production, Fumia’s design left an indelible mark on the Alfa Romeo 164 lineup. Elements of the Cabriolet’s design, such as the front bumpers and side protections, were later incorporated into the 164 Super model introduced in 1992 by the Centro Stile Alfa Romeo. This integration underscored the enduring influence of Fumia’s original vision on the evolution of the Alfa Romeo 164 series. While the 164 Cabriolet may have remained a concept, its legacy lives on as a testament to Pininfarina’s design excellence and Fumia’s creative vision. Its timeless beauty continues to inspire admiration and serves as a reminder of the innovative spirit that drives automotive design forward.
