01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Alfa Romeo 164 Coupé, a product of Pininfarina‘s visionary design under the leadership of Enrico Fumia, first appeared in 1985. This elegant coupé captured the hearts of automotive enthusiasts with its sophisticated design and dynamic performance, embodying the essence of Italian luxury and innovation. The 164 Coupé was notable for its striking aesthetics, characterized by sleek lines and a refined profile that showcased Pininfarina’s commitment to elegance. Its design was not only visually captivating but also engineered to deliver a thrilling driving experience. The introduction of a Cabriolet variant further broadened the 164’s appeal, offering an open-air driving experience that enhanced the sense of freedom and style for its owners. Enrico Fumia, in his insightful book “Autoritratto,” provides a detailed account of the evolution of the 164 series. According to Fumia, when the Alfa Romeo 164 Super was introduced in 1992, significant changes were made. The Centro Stile Alfa Romeo, under the direction of Walter De Silva, chose to retain only the front bumpers and side protections from the original coupé design. This decision represented a shift in design philosophy, adapting to the evolving tastes and trends of the early 1990s. The redesign highlighted a departure from the initial aesthetic, reflecting a period of transition and innovation within automotive design. Despite these changes, the Alfa Romeo 164 Coupé remains a symbol of enduring automotive excellence. Its legacy is a testament to the blend of tradition and innovation that defines Italian design. The 164 Coupé’s story underscores the dynamic nature of automotive design, capturing the essence of an era while influencing future generations. Its timeless appeal continues to be celebrated by enthusiasts and collectors, representing a high point in the rich history of Alfa Romeo and Pininfarina.
