01 / THE STORY

History & context

The NSU 1200 SS by Francis Lombardi is a one-off prototype presented in 1970, the product of a collaboration between the German automaker NSU and the Italian coachbuilder Francis Lombardi. Derived from the NSU 1200 TT platform, this unique coupé was unveiled at the Turin Motor Show as an exploration of Italian styling principles applied to a compact, rear-engined German automobile. It represents a distinct moment in postwar European automotive history, wherein stylistic experimentation frequently intersected with modest mechanical foundations. The base vehicle, the NSU 1200 TT, was already known for its compact proportions, rear-mounted engine, and lightweight construction, offering a nimble driving experience typical of its category. The SS version retained the technical underpinnings of the TT, including the 1.2-litre four-cylinder engine and rear-wheel drive layout, but the bodywork was entirely reimagined by Francis Lombardi. The design introduced a sharply contoured fastback silhouette, characterized by angular lines and a pronounced wedge profile. The rear glass was steeply raked and partially obscured by integrated louvres, a motif often associated with performance aspirations during that period. The coupé’s styling was in alignment with a broader European design trend toward aggressive, aerodynamically influenced shapes, even in vehicles of limited output. Its sharply defined beltline, concealed headlamps, and recessed door handles further signaled a departure from the utilitarian appearance of the production NSU models. The interior, though less documented, is presumed to have been treated with the same attention to form, likely combining minimalist German ergonomics with Italian aesthetic embellishments. Although the NSU 1200 SS did not enter production, it stands as a representative case of the Italian carrozzeria tradition, wherein coachbuilders reinterpreted existing automobiles for artistic and promotional purposes. Francis Lombardi, known for his earlier work on microcars and ceremonial vehicles, used the project to demonstrate design capabilities beyond functional conversions. The car remains preserved through archival documentation and occasional public appearances, contributing to the historiography of coachbuilt experimentation on mass-market platforms. It exemplifies a period when stylistic innovation flourished, even on modest mechanical canvases, driven by the independent vision of designers operating at the intersection of industry and artistry.
