01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Fiat 850 Monza, unveiled by Francis Lombardi at the 1969 Turin Motor Show, was an innovative targa version of the Lombardi Grand Prix. This open-top model, named “Monza,” showcased a clever and stylish solution for a removable roof. The roof could be easily detached and stored behind a distinctive rollover bar, a design feature that was ahead of its time. This design idea would later be seen in the Lamborghini Diablo, highlighting the forward-thinking approach of the Fiat 850 Monza’s creation. The Monza was an exciting variation of the already popular Fiat 850, offering enthusiasts a sporty, open-air experience while maintaining the compact and agile nature of the base model. The introduction of the rollover bar not only added a layer of safety to the car but also contributed to its distinct visual identity. At least two Monza models were built, making it a rare and intriguing part of automotive history. This version of the Fiat 850 was aimed at buyers looking for a more adventurous driving experience, combining the light and nimble characteristics of the original model with the thrills of a targa-top configuration. The Fiat 850 Monza remains a testament to innovative thinking in the automotive world, bridging classic Italian style with forward-looking design ideas.
