01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Fiat 527 Ardita Bertone, designed by the influential Mario Revelli di Beaumont, represents a significant step forward in automotive design and aerodynamics. Debuting at the 1934 Milano Auto Show, this model marked Bertone’s first appearance at the event and showcased a clear departure from traditional aesthetic norms. Revelli di Beaumont, a notable pioneer in car design, conceived an impressive four-door saloon with a streamlined, rounded profile for the Fiat 527 S Ardita chassis. This design featured several innovative elements for its time, such as integrated headlights within the long bonnet, a large panoramic windshield, and fared rear wings. The design also included a small third volume at the rear, serving as an early integrated boot, which highlighted the forward-thinking nature of the car’s design. Under the hood, the Fiat 527 Ardita Bertone was powered by a six-cylinder 2516 cc engine, capable of producing 60 hp at 3800 rpm. Despite its relatively short production run from 1934 to 1936, the car demonstrated impressive specifications, including a 3170 mm wheelbase, a kerb weight of 1450 kg, and a top speed of 115 km/h. The 527 S Ardita 2500’s design was a result of rigorous aerodynamic research and experimentation, characterized by its sleek, tapered lines and the early adoption of features that would become more common in later automotive designs. This car not only signified a shift towards new aesthetic criteria but also highlighted the innovative spirit and forward-looking vision of Mario Revelli di Beaumont and the Italian automotive industry in the early 1930s.
