01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Fiat 518 Ardita Berlina Panoramica, designed by Mario Revelli di Beaumont for Bertone, was a striking example of automotive design in the 1930s, blending functionality with stylistic innovation. This six-seat limousine introduced features that marked an evolution in automotive aesthetics and practicality, making it a standout creation of its era. One of the most distinctive elements of the Ardita Berlina Panoramica was its innovative sunroof, which extended into a transparent section above the windshield. This unique design improved driver visibility and brought additional light into the passenger compartment, creating a brighter and more inviting interior. The spare wheels, placed horizontally at the rear, doubled as bumpers, showcasing a clever combination of functionality and design. The styling of the Ardita reflected a transitional phase in automotive design. Rounded lines began to replace the boxier shapes of earlier cars, and the windscreen featured a slight inclination, contributing to the vehicle’s more modern, aerodynamic appearance. The front grille, which no longer served purely a mechanical purpose, was given an aesthetic treatment, enhancing the car’s overall elegance. Mechanically, the Fiat 518 was powered by a robust 1,944 cc four-cylinder engine with a bore and stroke of 82×92 mm, delivering 45 hp at 3,600 rpm. This provided reliable performance for a car of its size and class. The suspension system featured rigid axles on both the front and rear, a common setup for the time, while hydraulically operated brakes—first introduced by Fiat on the 1931 515—ensured effective stopping power. The Ardita was offered in two wheelbase configurations: a short version measuring 2,700 mm and a long version at 3,000 mm. Depending on the body type, the car weighed between 1,185 and 1,275 kg. These variations allowed for flexibility in usage, from more compact urban transport to spacious, comfortable touring. The Fiat 518 Ardita Bertone remains a symbol of innovation and sophistication, combining advanced engineering with creative design. It exemplifies Bertone’s ability to reinterpret Fiat’s platforms with a focus on elegance and functionality, paving the way for future developments in automotive styling.
