01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Isotta Fraschini 8B Tipo Zagato Aerodinamica was a coachbuilt aerodynamic saloon based on the Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8B chassis and bodied by Carrozzeria Zagato in the mid-1930s. It represented an unusual meeting between one of Italy’s most prestigious luxury marques and a coachbuilder more commonly associated with lightweight sporting cars. The Tipo 8B was introduced as the final development of Isotta Fraschini’s large straight-eight luxury car line. It used a powerful inline-eight engine and was intended for exclusive clients who wanted refinement, silence and high-speed touring ability. Most Tipo 8B bodies were formal limousines, cabriolets or luxury sedans, but Zagato’s interpretation gave the chassis a much more modern aerodynamic character. The body was long, low and carefully streamlined for a car of its size. The front retained a traditional vertical grille and separate headlamps, but the rest of the body was shaped with smoother surfaces than typical luxury cars of the period. The front wings flowed back into the body sides, while the rear wheels were partially enclosed by large spats. The tail was rounded and tapered, reducing visual weight and giving the car a more progressive profile. The side view shows the main intention of the design: a luxury saloon treated almost like an aerodynamic experiment. The roofline was curved and continuous, the rear section descended gently, and the body sides were kept clean, with only functional ventilation openings along the bonnet. Despite its size and four-door layout, the car avoided the heavy, upright look common among prestige automobiles of the 1930s. The Isotta Fraschini 8B Tipo Zagato Aerodinamica is significant because it shows Zagato applying aerodynamic ideas to a large luxury chassis, not only to small racing cars. It also reflects the brief pre-war period when Italian coachbuilders were exploring streamlined bodies for both performance and prestige automobiles.
