01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Chrysler CI Tipo Zagato Aerodinamica was an aerodynamic coachbuilt saloon bodied by Carrozzeria Zagato in the early 1930s on a Chrysler chassis. It was an unusual project, combining American mechanical engineering with Italian body design at a time when Zagato was experimenting with more efficient shapes for both sporting and luxury cars. The base car was the Chrysler CI, a model positioned in the American manufacturer’s early-1930s range as a refined and capable road car. While Chrysler was known for strong engineering and robust mechanical construction, Zagato’s intervention gave the car a very different character from a standard factory-bodied saloon. The body followed the aerodynamic ideas that were beginning to influence European coachbuilding during the period. The roofline was rounded and continuous, the rear section curved downward, and the body sides were kept clean and relatively smooth. The front wings flowed back in a long sweep, visually connecting the nose with the lower body. At the rear, the fenders were shaped to reduce visual bulk and partially cover the wheels, giving the car a more streamlined appearance. The side profile shows a clear attempt to modernize the traditional three-box saloon. The bonnet remained long and formal, but the cabin was more integrated into the overall shape. The windows were large and gently rounded at the corners, while the rear pillar and tail were designed to avoid the upright, square look typical of many sedans of the early 1930s. Details such as the ventilated bonnet sides, separate headlamps, slim bumpers and flowing lower body line kept the car linked to its period, but the general form was more progressive than conventional Chrysler production bodies. The Chrysler CI Tipo Zagato Aerodinamica is significant because it shows Zagato applying aerodynamic thinking to a foreign luxury chassis, not only to Italian sports cars. It also reflects the coachbuilder’s search for cleaner, faster-looking bodies before streamlining became a common design language in the later 1930s.
