01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Fiat 850 T Visitors OSI is a one-off prototype minibus built in 1968 by the Italian coachbuilder Officine Stampaggi Industriali (OSI). Developed on the mechanical underpinnings of the 850 T light commercial vehicle, the Visitors was specifically designed to transport guests and visitors within Fiat’s factory premises. This unique vehicle featured a bespoke body with a six-door configuration, allowing for convenient ingress and egress for multiple passengers. The design incorporated large panoramic side windows to enhance outward visibility, reflecting its intended role in guided tours of the manufacturing facilities. Compact in overall size, the vehicle maintained the maneuverability required for navigating narrow factory corridors and service roads. The project was executed by OSI, a Turin-based coachbuilding company founded in 1960 that specialized in limited-production vehicles and prototype designs. OSI collaborated with several major Italian automakers during its operation, producing notable designs for Ford, Alfa Romeo, and Fiat. The Fiat 850 T Visitors is believed to have been among the final projects completed by the company before it ceased operations in the same year, 1968. Only one example of the Fiat 850 T Visitors was produced, making it a unique specimen within the broader context of Fiat’s utility vehicle history. The surviving vehicle is preserved and occasionally exhibited at automotive heritage events and museums, where it is recognized as a rare representation of mid-century Italian industrial design and specialized coachbuilding. The 850 T Visitors remains notable for its function-specific design and its status as a rare product of Fiat’s extended industrial ecosystem during a period of significant automotive growth and innovation in Italy.
