01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 S Coupé Turinga, chassis number 915.526, was a singular example of bespoke coachbuilding undertaken by Carrozzeria Touring on the 6C 2500 Super Sport platform. Constructed between 1943 and 1945, this coupé represents a unique interpretation of Touring’s aerodynamic design language applied to Alfa Romeo’s advanced pre- and immediate post-war chassis. The car was designated “Turinga” in period records, a name possibly derived from internal Touring nomenclature rather than an official Alfa Romeo designation. The chassis was derived from the 6C 2500 S (Super Sport) series, which featured a shortened wheelbase of approximately 2,700 mm. The engine was Alfa Romeo’s 2,443 cc inline six-cylinder with dual overhead camshafts, equipped with three horizontal Weber carburetors. The power output for this configuration was approximately 110 horsepower at 4,800 rpm. Drive was delivered to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission. The car featured independent front suspension with wishbones and coil springs, and a rear suspension layout utilizing trailing arms and torsion bars. Hydraulic drum brakes were fitted at all four corners. Touring constructed the body using its patented Superleggera technique—aluminum alloy panels mounted over a tubular steel framework. The design exhibited streamlined proportions, integrated front fenders, a compact greenhouse, and modest ornamentation. Faired-in headlamps and subtle ventilation details characterized the frontal treatment. The rear featured a tapered tail with minimal chrome elements. Interior fittings were consistent with Touring practice, including leather upholstery, functional instrumentation, and a wood-rimmed steering wheel. Only one example of this specific body configuration is known to have been built on the 6C 2500 S chassis. Chassis number 915.526 is the sole recorded Turinga Coupé and is distinct within the broader catalogue of Touring-bodied 6C 2500 models. It is believed to have remained with Touring before eventual transfer to private ownership in Europe. The vehicle has since been restored and has appeared at a number of international concours events. This coupé constitutes a notable example of limited-production Italian coachbuilding on Alfa Romeo’s final six-cylinder platform prior to the introduction of the 1900 series. Its uniqueness and documented provenance confer particular historical significance.
