01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Giannini 850 TV Coupé by Viotti was a limited-production sports coupé based on the Fiat 850 platform and produced in 1963. The vehicle was developed through a collaboration between Giannini Automobili of Rome and Carrozzeria Viotti of Turin, with body design attributed to Pietro Frua. It represented an example of a performance-oriented reinterpretation of a mass-produced compact car, executed through mechanical tuning and custom coachwork. The mechanical base was derived from the Fiat 850, a rear-engined, rear-wheel-drive compact introduced in 1964. Giannini, known for its development of performance upgrades for Fiat models, reworked the standard 843 cc inline four-cylinder engine with modifications that included revised carburetion, cylinder head, camshaft, and exhaust components. In the 850 TV configuration, the engine produced between 48 and 60 horsepower depending on tuning level. The transmission was a four-speed manual unit, and the suspension layout retained independent rear suspension with semi-trailing arms and coil springs. The body was constructed by Carrozzeria Viotti and followed a design created by Pietro Frua. The configuration was a two-door fastback coupé with a low roofline, short rear deck, and minimal exterior trim. The design featured recessed headlamps, smooth flanks, and a clean beltline, typical of Frua’s restrained aesthetic approach during the early 1960s. The structure employed steel panels formed over a lightened version of the standard Fiat 850 chassis. Production was limited, with estimates suggesting that fewer than a dozen units were completed. No definitive chassis numbering sequence has been published, and the precise number of vehicles built remains unverified. No example is presently identified in public registries, museum holdings, or private collections with full documentation. No individual ownership records or export data are known. The Giannini 850 TV Coupé by Viotti reflects the mid-century Italian practice of integrating mechanical tuning with bespoke coachbuilding on mass-market platforms. It occupies a minor but distinctive position within the landscape of Italian automotive production, representing a convergence of artisan bodywork and small-displacement performance engineering. The model is recorded in coachbuilding literature and photographic documentation but is not known to survive in confirmed physical form.

DONOR PLATFORM UNRESOLVED — NON-BLOCKING. Pietro Frua archive securely documents the 1963 Fiat Giannini 850 TV Coupé Gazella / Giannini 850 GT Viotti Coupé project. Conflicting secondary claims identify either Fiat 600 D or Fiat 850-derived mechanics; platform and mechanical fields therefore remain blank pending period Giannini evidence.
