01 / THE STORY

History & context

The new generation of the Maserati Quattroporte, designed by Pininfarina, emerged under the meticulous oversight of Ferrari following a strategic merger between Ferrari and Maserati. This merger was part of a broader reorganization initiated by the top management of the Fiat group, which owned both brands. The fourth series of the Quattroporte had only moderate sales success and did little to enhance Maserati’s image, which had been tarnished by the Biturbo series. These earlier models were criticized for their technical shortcomings and failed to capture public admiration. With the new generation, Maserati aimed to regain its competitive edge and boost sales, particularly in key markets such as the United States and the Middle East. A significant aspect of the new model’s strategy was to return to the luxury and elegance that had originally defined the Maserati Quattroporte, making it an exclusive and desirable vehicle. This focus on luxury was balanced with an emphasis on performance and sportiness, ensuring the car appealed to driving enthusiasts as well. The goal was to create a true grand tourer that combined a pleasurable driving experience with comfort for five passengers. This dual focus on driving enjoyment and passenger comfort was seen as essential for the model’s success. The new Maserati Quattroporte Pininfarina needed to distinguish itself as a luxurious, high-performance vehicle that could compete in the global market, revitalizing Maserati’s reputation and re-establishing its presence among the world’s premier automotive brands.
