01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Lancia Stratos Zero was introduced at the 1970 Turin Motor Show as a radical concept designed by Marcello Gandini for Bertone. Conceived as an experimental design study rather than a production car, it preceded the Lancia Stratos HF prototype by one year and served as the creative foundation for the future rally and road versions. The car was powered by a mid-mounted 1.6-liter V4 engine from the Lancia Fulvia HF, positioned in an extremely low chassis that redefined conventional automotive architecture. Built on a custom tubular frame, the Stratos Zero measured only 3.58 meters in length and just 84 centimeters in height. Its wedge-shaped aluminum bodywork, finished in metallic orange, represented an uncompromising pursuit of aerodynamic minimalism. The sharply pointed nose, triangular roof section, and deeply inset lighting units formed a continuous geometric composition that eliminated traditional distinctions between hood, roof, and tail. The suspension, steering, and powertrain components were specially adapted from the Fulvia, though their layout was extensively modified to fit the new mid-engine configuration. Entry into the vehicle was achieved through a forward-hinged canopy that incorporated the windscreen and allowed the driver to step directly into the cockpit. Other distinctive features included double-layered side windows, integrated lighting elements, and minimal external ornamentation. The interior was reduced to its functional essentials, with the seats positioned almost horizontally and the instrument cluster mounted low before the driver. The prototype remained in Bertone’s private collection for decades before being sold at auction in 2011 for €761,600. It later appeared in the exhibitions “Sculpture in Motion: Masterpieces of Italian Design” at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles and “Dream Cars” at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, loaned from the XJ Wang Collection. Known initially as the “Stratoline,” the Stratos Zero represented a complete redefinition of the automobile’s form and directly inspired the production Lancia Stratos HF.
