01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Volvo MPV by Carrozzeria Coggiola is a one-off concept vehicle developed in 1988 by the Italian coachbuilder Sergio Coggiola. This prototype exemplifies the innovative spirit of late 20th-century automotive design, merging Scandinavian practicality with Italian creativity. Commissioned independently, the Volvo MPV concept was Coggiola’s vision of a modern multipurpose vehicle, anticipating the rise of the minivan segment in Europe. The design featured a boxy yet aerodynamic silhouette, characterized by a sharply raked windshield, expansive glass surfaces, and a high roofline to maximize interior space. The front fascia bore a resemblance to contemporary Volvo models, with rectangular headlamps and a minimalist grille, while the rear showcased vertical taillights integrated into the vehicle’s pillars. Inside, the concept emphasized versatility and comfort, with a spacious cabin designed to accommodate multiple seating configurations. The flat floor and ample headroom were indicative of its intended function as a family-oriented vehicle, aligning with Volvo’s reputation for safety and practicality. Although the Volvo MPV by Coggiola remained a singular prototype and did not enter production, it stands as a testament to forward-thinking design. Its conceptualization predated the widespread popularity of MPVs in Europe, highlighting Coggiola’s foresight in automotive trends. Today, the vehicle is recognized among enthusiasts and historians as a unique fusion of Italian design flair and Swedish functionalism.
