01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Volvo 780 was a Volvo coupé built by Bertone from 1985. The project began with a Volvo concept developed in 1981, then underwent further refinement at Bertone. The finished car combined Bertone styling with Volvo’s established design language and was positioned for the American market. Production continued at Bertone’s Grugliasco factory until 1991.

Volvo’s initial proposal predated the production car by several years. Bertone then developed the concept into the 780, giving the model its own exterior treatment while retaining its Volvo identity. The collaboration placed the Italian coachbuilder in charge of building a Volvo model whose design did not originate solely within Bertone’s own studios. Its long, formal proportions and clean lines distinguished it from Volvo’s more familiar saloon and estate body styles of the period.

The 780 was offered with several engines during its production life. Petrol choices included 2.0-, 2.3- and 2.8-litre units, while a 2.4-litre diesel was also available. This range gave the coupé both four- and six-cylinder petrol options as well as a diesel alternative, depending on market and period. The car’s mechanical offering therefore extended beyond a single engine specification during the 1985–1991 production run.

Bertone produced the Volvo 780 at Grugliasco, near Turin. More than 9,000 examples were made over the course of production. The model was sold internationally and reached markets on five continents. Its manufacture at Grugliasco joined Volvo’s Swedish marque with Bertone’s Italian production operation for the complete seven-year life of the 780.
