01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Triumph Italia 2000 was a limited-production grand touring coupé produced between 1959 and 1962. The project was initiated by Salvatore Ruffino, the Italian importer of Standard-Triumph vehicles, who aimed to combine British mechanical components with Italian design and coachbuilding. The car was designed by Giovanni Michelotti and constructed by Carrozzeria Alfredo Vignale in Turin. Mechanically, the Italia 2000 was based on the Triumph TR3A platform and used the same 1,991 cc inline four-cylinder engine with twin SU carburetors. The unit produced approximately 100 horsepower (74 kW) at 5,000 rpm and 160 Nm of torque at 3,000 rpm. Power was transmitted to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual gearbox, with overdrive available as an option. Performance data indicated a top speed of around 200 km/h. The drivetrain layout was front-engine, rear-wheel drive, consistent with the TR3A configuration. The chassis employed independent front suspension with coil springs and wishbones, and a solid rear axle with leaf springs. Braking was hydraulic, using drum brakes on early cars and front disc brakes on later examples. Steering was by a cam-and-peg system. The car rode on 15-inch wire wheels and used radial tyres suited to high-speed touring. The body was constructed in pressed steel, featuring Michelotti’s balanced proportions and restrained detailing. The design was characterized by a long bonnet, short rear deck, and a smoothly sloping roofline. The interior accommodated two occupants, trimmed in leather with full instrumentation and chrome fittings typical of period Italian craftsmanship. Dimensions included an overall length of 3,940 mm, width of 1,454 mm, height of 1,240 mm, and a wheelbase of 2,235 mm. Kerb weight was approximately 975 kg. A total of around 330 examples were built. two of which prototypes, before production ceased in 1962 due to changes in Triumph’s corporate structure. The Triumph Italia 2000 remains notable for its fusion of Italian styling and British mechanical reliability, representing one of the most distinctive Anglo-Italian sports coupés of its era.
