01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Tata Pr1ma Concept was a four-door sedan prototype presented by Tata Motors at the Geneva Motor Show in 2009. Designed in collaboration with Pininfarina, the vehicle represented Tata’s strategic intent to explore entry into the premium passenger car segment. The name “Pr1ma” was derived from the Italian word “prima,” meaning first, referencing its position as Tata’s first luxury sedan concept. The concept was constructed on an extended version of the Tata Indigo platform. The wheelbase measured approximately 2,700 mm, exceeding the standard Indigo configuration by over 150 mm. This modification allowed for increased interior volume, particularly in the rear seating area. Although detailed mechanical specifications were not formally released, it is presumed that the concept retained a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout in line with the platform architecture. Engine details were not disclosed, though period assumptions indicated use of a petrol or diesel four-cylinder power unit, paired with a manual or automatic gearbox. Performance data was not published. The exterior design was executed by Pininfarina and featured a fastback roofline, elongated proportions, a pronounced shoulder line, and minimal ornamentation. The silhouette suggested coupe-like influences despite its four-door configuration. The design approach emphasized clarity of surface and proportion rather than ornamental complexity. The front end incorporated a narrow grille with integrated headlamp assemblies, while the rear was marked by a clean tapering profile and horizontal light treatment. Only one example of the Tata Pr1ma Concept was constructed. No production run followed. The concept remained a standalone design exercise and was not homologated for road use. No chassis number was publicly associated with the prototype. The vehicle remained in Tata Motors’ internal portfolio and did not enter private ownership or institutional collections.

- TECH 2026-09-21 — contemporary coverage identifies the Pr1ma as developed on the Tata Indigo sedan platform with a 2700 mm wheelbase. No engine/power figures are structured because the concept was primarily a design/engineering study and checked sources do not establish a unique Pr1ma powertrain.
