01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Frua stands as a remarkable bespoke creation commissioned by H.E. Consul Simon van Kempen in 1971, residing in Switzerland. Ordered on the chassis of Rolls-Royce’s top model, this project was entrusted to Pietro Frua, renowned for his exquisite automotive designs. However, the completion of the Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Frua was not swift—it took until 1973 for Frua to finish the entire vehicle, despite the chassis being delivered in 1971. The formal guarantee documentation from Rolls-Royce detailing the chassis-card specifics was finally completed on 10th December 1973, marking the official recognition of the car’s creation. Pietro Frua, known for his meticulous approach and distinctive design language, also crafted another bespoke Rolls-Royce Phantom VI, known as the All Weather Cabriolet, featuring chassis number PRH4643. This second creation further showcases Frua’s mastery in blending Rolls-Royce’s luxurious engineering with his own artistic vision. Both the Phantom Drophead and the All Weather Cabriolet represent the pinnacle of bespoke automotive design from the early 1970s. These one-off creations not only embody luxury and exclusivity but also highlight the collaborative effort between Rolls-Royce and Pietro Frua in pushing the boundaries of automotive craftsmanship and design. Each car tells a story of dedication, craftsmanship, and the pursuit of automotive excellence, making them highly prized among collectors and enthusiasts alike.
