01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Mini CrossUP is a bespoke concept vehicle developed by the Italian coachbuilder Carrozzeria Castagna Milano, unveiled in 2005. Based on the first-generation BMW Mini (R50/R53), the CrossUP was conceived as a versatile, off-road-inspired pickup, blending urban agility with rugged styling cues. The CrossUP features an extended rear section, transforming the traditional Mini hatchback into a compact pickup. This extension includes a cargo bed clad in scratch-resistant materials, equipped with lockable compartments designed to accommodate various accessories, enhancing the vehicle’s utility for diverse applications . A notable feature is its variable suspension system, allowing the ground clearance to be adjusted up to 25 cm. This adaptability enables the CrossUP to navigate different terrains, from urban streets to off-road paths, with equal proficiency . True to Castagna’s tradition of bespoke craftsmanship, the CrossUP’s interior is tailored to client specifications. One distinctive option includes a centrally mounted ‘Vodka-Cigar’ mini-fridge, capable of chilling beverages or maintaining optimal humidity for cigars, exemplifying the fusion of luxury and functionality. The Mini CrossUP was showcased at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show, alongside other Castagna creations like the Mini Tender and the Imperial Landaulet Concept. While it remained a concept, the CrossUP exemplifies Castagna’s innovative approach to reimagining existing platforms, merging classic design elements with contemporary needs .
