01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Mercedes-Benz 230 SL Shooting Brake created by Pietro Frua in 1964 is a rare and unique interpretation of the classic Pagoda. Based on the iconic Mercedes-Benz 230 SL, which became renowned for its distinctive pagoda-shaped roof, this shooting brake conversion takes the beloved roadster to a whole new level of elegance and practicality. Pietro Frua, the acclaimed Italian coachbuilder, was known for his innovative designs, and the 230 SL Shooting Brake is no exception. By transforming the sleek roadster into a two-door wagon, Frua successfully blended the performance and charm of the Pagoda with added utility and sophistication. While maintaining the front end of the original 230 SL, including its signature grille and headlights, the rest of the body was reimagined to create a stunning, elongated rear that could accommodate extra luggage or even sporting equipment. The white exterior paint of this shooting brake enhances its clean, timeless appeal, offering a contrast to the more traditional roadster design. The extended rear design seamlessly integrates with the original car’s lines, making it look as though the car was always meant to be this way: luxurious, stylish, and functional. The design is subtly different, but it retains the grace and class that Mercedes-Benz is known for, with Frua’s touch of artistry elevating the visual impact. Inside, the car boasts the comfort and craftsmanship typical of the Mercedes-Benz brand, featuring plush leather upholstery and premium materials. The performance and engineering of the Pagoda are maintained, ensuring that the 230 SL Shooting Brake provides the same thrilling driving experience as its donor model, while also offering more versatility and space.
