01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Maserati MC12 is a homologation model produced in 2004 and 2005 for FIA GT competition. It is constructed on the carbon-fibre monocoque chassis of the Ferrari Enzo but employs altered dimensions, aerodynamic structures and bodywork geometry. The MC12 measures 5,143 mm in length, 2,096 mm in width and 1,205 mm in height, making it longer, wider and taller than the Enzo. The wheelbase is 2,800 mm. The exterior surfaces use a sharper front profile, extended overhangs and smoother curvature transitions to achieve a lower drag coefficient and increased downforce through integrated aerodynamics, including a full-width rear wing. The power unit is a 5,998 cc naturally aspirated 65-degree V12 mounted longitudinally in a mid-rear layout. Output is 630 PS and 652 Nm. The transmission is a six-speed automated sequential unit, transmitting torque to the rear axle. The MC12’s kerb weight is approximately 1,335 kg, supported by a carbon and Nomex composite tub with aluminium subframes. Performance includes 0–100 km/h in about 3.8 seconds and a top speed near 330 km/h. Acceleration and braking capability remain below the Enzo’s figures, as the Ferrari exhibits higher peak output and lower mass, but the MC12 targets stability, endurance and aerodynamic efficiency for racing purposes rather than maximum straight-line metrics. Suspension consists of double wishbones with push-rod actuated coil-over dampers on both axles. Braking uses ventilated Brembo carbon-ceramic discs with ABS. Tyres are 245/35 ZR19 front and 345/35 ZR19 rear. Cooling is controlled by lateral intakes, a roof-mounted intake and rear extraction channels. The rear structure incorporates a fixed wing sized to meet GT homologation requirements. The MC12’s bodywork uses carbon-fibre panels over the composite chassis. The cockpit is configured for two occupants with minimal adjustments from the Enzo’s basic ergonomics. A total of 50 road cars and 12 track-only versions were produced. The model served as the homologation base for the MC12 GT1, which competed successfully in FIA GT events. Designed by Frank Stephenson and co-developed by Italdesign.
