01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Maserati Barchetta, introduced in 1991, stands as a testament to Italian automotive innovation and design. Conceived by designer Carlo Gaino of Synthesis Design, the Barchetta was developed under the ownership of Alejandro de Tomaso to revitalize Maserati’s racing heritage through a dedicated one-make series known as the Grantrofeo Barchetta Maserati. This two-seater, open-top sports car featured a mid-mounted, twin-turbocharged 2.0-liter V6 engine, producing 315 horsepower at 7,250 rpm. The engine was paired with a six-speed ZF manual transmission, enabling the Barchetta to achieve a top speed exceeding 300 km/h. Weighing approximately 775 kg, thanks to its aluminum backbone chassis and composite body panels, the Barchetta offered exceptional agility and performance on the track. The Barchetta’s design emphasized functionality and lightweight construction. Its body was composed of carbon fiber, fiberglass, and aluminum honeycomb, resulting in a structure both rigid and light. The suspension system employed Formula 1-inspired push-rod and pull-rod configurations, with double wishbones at both the front and rear, ensuring precise handling characteristics. Between 1991 and 1993, Maserati produced a total of 17 Barchettas, including two prototypes. The majority were utilized in the Grantrofeo series, which featured races across Italy and select European circuits. Despite its limited production and racing tenure, the Barchetta left a lasting impression, showcasing Maserati’s commitment to innovation and performance. The Barchetta’s legacy continued through its influence on the De Tomaso Guarà, which adopted the Barchetta’s chassis design and was also styled by Carlo Gaino. The Maserati Barchetta is celebrated as a rare and significant model in the brand’s history, embodying the spirit of Italian racing and design excellence.
