01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Lancia Trikappa Bertone is a remarkable example of early 20th-century automotive innovation, blending powerful engineering with refined design. Featuring a sophisticated 14° V8 engine with a displacement of 4592 cc and overhead valves, it generated 98 hp at 2500 rpm. This impressive power, combined with the car’s advanced mechanics, made it a standout vehicle of its time. The Trikappa was equipped with a 12V electrical system, a notable feature in its era, and as of the second series, it came with drum brakes on all four wheels, reflecting improvements in safety and performance. Bertone’s relationship with Lancia, especially during the early part of his career, was instrumental in shaping some of the most elegant and innovative designs of the time. The Lancia Trikappa, particularly the landaulet limousine and coupé De Ville versions, are considered some of Bertone’s finest creations, showcasing his skill in crafting bodies that complemented Lancia’s engineering excellence. These models highlighted Bertone’s dedication to creating bespoke, luxurious cars, with each body meticulously designed to enhance both form and function. The Trikappa featured a wheelbase of 3384 mm and tracks measuring 1365/1370 mm, contributing to its stable and smooth ride. Despite its significant size, the car was capable of reaching a top speed of 130 km/h, which was impressive for a vehicle of its class during that period. Produced between 1922 and 1925, the Lancia Trikappa Bertone remains an enduring symbol of automotive luxury and craftsmanship. Its combination of mechanical innovation and elegant design established it as a prestigious model and cemented Bertone’s reputation as a master coachbuilder.
