01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Lancia Flaminia Presidenziale is a remarkable example of bespoke automotive design, tailored specifically for the highest echelons of state. Designed by Pininfarina in the early 1960s, this cabriolet-landaulet version of the Lancia Flaminia was created to meet the unique needs of the Italian President. With only four units produced, the Flaminia Presidenziale stands as a symbol of luxury, elegance, and statecraft. Introduced to the public in 1957, the Lancia Flaminia saloon quickly earned a reputation as one of the most luxurious and refined cars of its era. It was celebrated for its superior ride comfort and high-quality interior finishes. The saloon’s success led to several special versions, including the sleek 4-seater Pininfarina coupé, the Touring coupé and cabriolet, and the stylish Zagato coupé. However, the Flaminia Presidenziale was a different breed altogether, tailored for ceremonial use. The Flaminia Presidenziale’s design featured an extra-long wheelbase, a modification that enhanced its presence and functionality during parades and public appearances. The extended chassis was complemented by technical modifications, including a specialized set of gear ratios designed to accommodate the slower speeds required during official events and processions. These changes ensured the vehicle was both impressive and practical for its intended use. In 2001, Fiat Auto undertook the restoration of these prestigious vehicles, returning them to their original splendor. One of the restored Flaminia Presidenziale was generously donated by President Ciampi to the Turin Museum, where it stands as a testament to Italy’s automotive heritage and the luxury associated with high office. The Lancia Flaminia Presidenziale remains a quintessential example of automotive luxury and craftsmanship. Its combination of bespoke design, practical modifications, and historical significance underscores its place as a cherished artifact in the annals of automotive history.
