01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Lancia Aurelia PF200 Cabriolet chassis B52-1051 is an exceptional example of 1950s Italian fuoriserie design, crafted by Carrozzeria Pininfarina as a prototype showcasing cutting-edge styling and innovation. Finished in a deep green with a beige leather interior, this remarkable cabriolet sits atop the rare B52 chassis and is powered by Lancia’s groundbreaking 1,991cc V6 engine—fitted with Nardi carburetor kits and delivering approximately 90bhp at 4,800 rpm. Power is sent through a rear-mounted four-speed transaxle, a hallmark of the Aurelia’s advanced engineering. The PF200 series was conceived by Battista “Pinin” Farina and further developed by his son Sergio, who described this very car as “very unique.” Inspired by American jet-age design from Harley Earl’s GM Art and Color Section, the PF200 features bold, fuselage-like lines, dramatic cut-down doors, and flared fenders that echo the era’s fascination with speed and aviation. A similar body style appeared on a Cadillac Series 62 chassis in 1953, showing Pininfarina’s exploration of transatlantic aesthetics. Although registered in the U.S. as a 1952 model, evidence suggests this car was constructed in late 1953 and may have appeared at major European shows, including the 1954 Brussels Auto Salon. Developed by engineering legends Vittorio Jano and Gianni Lancia, the Aurelia also holds the distinction of being the first production car to feature a V6 engine, designed by Francesco De Virgilio. Under single ownership since 1968, B52-1051 was shown at the 1993 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and most recently at the 2023 Greenwich Concours. It retains its original tools, spare, radio, and manuals, with mileage believed to be original. Restored and repainted, the car remains in excellent condition and is well suited for premier touring events or concours displays worldwide.
