01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Lancia Aurelia B53 Cabriolet by Pininfarina is a distinguished emblem of post-war Italian automotive excellence. Unveiled initially at the 1950 Turin Motor Show as a berlina, the Lancia Aurelia, particularly in its B10 form, showcased significant potential with its pioneering V-6 engine. However, the real game-changer was the Aurelia autotelaio, initially known as the B50, designed for coachbuilders. This platform allowed Italy’s revered artisan body makers, from Allemano to Viotti, to craft unique automotive masterpieces, enhancing the Aurelia’s legacy. Among these creations, the B53 Cabriolet stands out, especially in its two-plus-two convertible form. Built on the extensive 2,910-millimetre wheelbase, the B53 represents the pinnacle of the series’ evolution, featuring a shorter final drive and larger tyres for improved performance. According to the Certificato di Origine issued by Lancia Classiche in May 2024, this particular B53 Cabriolet left the factory on October 21, 1952, destined for completion by Pininfarina. Notably, it was one of the last B53 chassis produced, as confirmed by marque historian Wim Oude Weernink. Believed to have been exhibited at the 1953 Brussels Motor Show, this car originally sported a striking Rosso exterior paired with a Cuoio Nocciola (hazelnut leather) interior. It initially featured a 70 brake horsepower 2-litre B21 engine. The early history of the vehicle remains obscure until it resurfaced in the UK during the 1990s. After changing hands among a few UK owners, it was acquired by its current owner in 2005. Subsequently, the B53 underwent an extensive restoration from 2006 to 2008 by Omicron, a marque specialist based in Norwich, Norfolk. The restoration, documented through detailed correspondence between Omicron founder Martin Cliffe and the owner, included nearly 1,700 hours of meticulous work. This encompassed a bare metal respray in a pale period blue, a new cabriolet hood, a retrim from brown to red leather, and a comprehensive mechanical rebuild. The B12 engine, believed to have been installed during a previous ownership, was retained. The Lancia Aurelia B53 Cabriolet by Pininfarina is not just a car; it is a bespoke grand tourer of exceptional caliber, embodying the artistry and innovation of post-war Italian automotive design.
