01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Lancia Astura Coupé de Vizcaya is a one-off automobile constructed in 1933, representing the convergence of Italian engineering and bespoke coachbuilding during the interwar period. Built on the chassis of the Lancia Astura, a model introduced in 1931, the Coupé de Vizcaya was bodied by Pinin Farina, one of Italy’s foremost carrozzerie. The vehicle’s name is derived from its original commissioner, believed to be a member of the Spanish noble de Vizcaya family. The Astura chassis, developed by Lancia under the direction of Vincenzo Lancia, was a favored platform for custom coachwork due to its robust structure, refined ride quality, and mechanical reliability. Powered by a narrow-angle V8 engine with a displacement of approximately 2.6 liters, the car was equipped with a four-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive layout. The chassis featured Lancia’s patented sliding pillar front suspension and a rigid rear axle, consistent with engineering standards of the era. The Pinin Farina bodywork of the Coupé de Vizcaya is distinguished by its elongated proportions, formal roofline, and sweeping fender contours. The design exhibits the early expressions of streamlining that would later characterize 1930s automotive form, yet retains the upright, formal aesthetic of pre-war luxury automobiles. Attention to detail in trim, glasswork, and interior appointments reflects the artisanal approach typical of coachbuilt cars from this period. No other examples of this body style are known to exist. The vehicle remained largely obscure for much of the 20th century and has resurfaced in recent years as a rare artifact of early Pinin Farina design. As a one-off commission, it does not represent a production model but rather a unique collaboration between client, chassis manufacturer, and coachbuilder. The Lancia Astura Coupé de Vizcaya is regarded as a significant specimen within the context of early 20th-century European automotive design. It exemplifies the aesthetic and technical sensibilities of its era and occupies a distinct place in the history of custom-built luxury vehicles.
