01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Lancia Astura Cabriolet (1935) was coachbuilt by Pininfarina and designed by Pininfarina. The Lancia Astura was developed during a period marked by significant advancements in automotive design and engineering, reflecting the evolving tastes and technological capabilities of the mid-1930s. The coachbuilding and design process for the Astura Cabriolet emphasized aerodynamic proportions, resulting in a streamlined silhouette that contributed to both aesthetics and performance. Construction methods included a lightweight body design, which was typical of Pininfarina’s approach at the time, focusing on elegance while ensuring structural integrity.
Mechanically, the Lancia Astura Cabriolet was equipped with a V8 engine, powered by a robust powertrain that underscored the model’s performance capabilities. The chassis was developed using advanced engineering principles, ensuring a harmonious balance between handling and ride comfort. The suspension system incorporated innovations that enhanced stability and driving dynamics, making the Astura Cabriolet a notable example of its era.
Production data for the Lancia Astura Cabriolet is limited, with specific numbers not documented, yet it is recognized that the model was part of a broader series of luxury vehicles produced by Lancia during the 1930s. Surviving examples of the Astura Cabriolet are recorded in private collections and institutional archives, providing reference for researchers of postwar coachbuilding. Documentation indicates that these models often participated in various exhibitions, showcasing the craftsmanship and design excellence of Pininfarina. Overall, the Lancia Astura Cabriolet Aerodinamico Pininfarina remains a significant subject of study for automotive historians, reflecting the artistry and engineering prowess of its time.

- Published Pininfarina Archive material identifies an Astura Roadster shown at the Turin Concours in 1935; Art of Cars independently identifies exact chassis 33-5181 as the 1935 Pinin Farina Astura 233C Roadster by Mario Revelli di Beaumont. This makes legacy 68279 a strong same-project candidate, but the legacy page itself still lacks a direct image/chassis/archive-card bridge. Keep non-additive; do not assign 33-5181 or Revelli until that bridge is recovered.
