01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Lancia Artena Bertone, crafted by Carrozzerìa Bertone in the early 1930s, was a refined four-seat saloon built on the Lancia Artena chassis. While the design retained the classic, square lines of the original production model, Bertone’s interpretation introduced subtle yet distinctive changes that set it apart. One of the most recognizable features of the Lancia Artena Bertone is its radiator and bonnet, which were virtually identical to those found on the production version. This maintained the car’s original character and ensured its connection to the Lancia brand’s signature design elements. However, Bertone’s expertise in bodywork is evident in the refined detailing throughout, especially in the slightly shaped luggage compartment. This compartment, while still separate from the main body, had a more integrated look that complemented the vehicle’s overall design and contributed to a more streamlined silhouette. The Lancia Artena Bertone was a blend of elegance and practicality, offering ample seating for four passengers while maintaining the luxurious feel that was synonymous with Lancia. The slight modifications Bertone applied to the original design elevated its aesthetic without straying too far from the well-regarded form of the standard Artena. This model is a great example of Bertone’s ability to enhance a car’s design without drastically altering its foundational elements, creating a more visually sophisticated version of the original saloon. The Artena Bertone remains a testament to Bertone’s craftsmanship and attention to detail, marking a key moment in the history of automotive design during the early 20th century.
