01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Lancia Aprilia Cabriolet Pininfarina represents one of the bespoke open-bodied interpretations of Lancia’s advanced Aprilia chassis in the immediate postwar period. This dossier concerns chassis 439-11854, identified in the Carrozzieri Italiani archive as a 1947 Pinin Farina-bodied cabriolet. Unlike the standard factory saloon, the cabriolet employed specialist coachwork developed around the compact mechanical package of the Aprilia.

Launched before the Second World War, the Aprilia was noted for its narrow-angle V4 engine, independent front suspension and unusually considered aerodynamic design. Postwar examples continued to provide a foundation for coachbuilders producing small-series and individually commissioned bodies. Pinin Farina’s cabriolet treatment gave the model an elegant open configuration while retaining its underlying Lancia identity.

The historical record for this particular car must be kept separate from the broader story of the Pinin Farina Aprilia cabriolets. Period concours appearances and details associated with other Aprilia chassis cannot automatically be transferred to chassis 439-11854. Further archive documentation may refine the vehicle’s individual ownership and exhibition history.
