01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Lancia Aprilia Belvedere production version was a special-bodied saloon developed from the earlier Pinin Farina Belvedere prototype. Built on the Lancia Aprilia platform, it retained the concept of a refined closed car with improved light and visibility, but abandoned the more experimental windscreen solution associated with the Vistotal-type patent. Compared with the prototype, the production version adopted a more conventional framed windscreen. This made the car easier to build, more practical to maintain and better suited to limited production. The large panoramic roof opening remained the main identifying feature of the Belvedere idea, derived from the patent associated with Mario Revelli di Beaumont. It allowed more light into the cabin and gave the car a more open atmosphere while preserving the comfort and protection of a closed saloon. The body followed the streamlined language of late-1930s Italian coachbuilding. The front retained the vertical Lancia grille, with separate headlamps integrated into the front wing area. The bonnet was long and clean, with side ventilation slats and discreet brightwork. The passenger compartment had large side windows, rounded roof contours and a carefully balanced four-door layout. The rear section was rounded and integrated, in line with the aerodynamic approach already associated with the standard Aprilia. Mechanically, the car used the Lancia Aprilia base, with a narrow-angle V4 engine, independent suspension and the advanced engineering layout that made the model one of Lancia’s most important pre-war cars. The Belvedere body did not seek to transform the Aprilia into a sporting model, but to create a more elegant and luminous saloon with coachbuilt detailing. The production Belvedere is significant because it shows how an experimental idea was adapted into a more usable form. By removing the complex Vistotal-style windscreen and keeping the panoramic roof concept, Pinin Farina created a version that was less radical than the prototype but more suitable for real-world use. It remains one of the most distinctive pre-war Aprilia fuoriserie variants.
