01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Lamborghini Miura Concept crafted by FabrizioGiorgetto Giugiaro: Car Designer of the Century Giugiaro stands as a unique homage to his father, Giorgetto Giugiaro, one of the most influential automotive designers of the 20th century. This singular model was unveiled in 2011 as a surprise gift for Giorgetto’s 70th birthday, embodying a design that had remained dormant for nearly five decades. During his tenure at Carrozzeria Bertone in the early 1960s, Giorgetto Giugiaro created several design proposals for Lamborghini’s inaugural production models. Among these was a concept that, while ultimately not selected, showcased Giugiaro’s visionary approach to automotive design. This particular sketch, characterized by its sleek lines and innovative proportions, was set aside as Lamborghini proceeded with other design directions. Decades later, Fabrizio Giugiaro rediscovered this forgotten sketch among his father’s archives. Recognizing its historical and sentimental value, Fabrizio decided to bring the design to life. He meticulously digitized the original drawing, developed a three-dimensional model, and constructed a full-scale prototype. The resulting vehicle featured period-appropriate details such as Borrani wire wheels, classic headlamp designs, and a distinctive yellow paint finish reminiscent of 1960s Italian sports cars. This creation was not merely a tribute but a tangible realization of a design that had never progressed beyond the drawing board. While the production Lamborghini Miura, introduced in 1966, is widely attributed to designer Marcello Gandini, then a young talent at Bertone, the existence of Giugiaro’s earlier design offers insight into the diverse creative explorations occurring within Bertone during that era. Giugiaro’s concept, though not directly influencing the final Miura design, reflects the innovative spirit and design experimentation that characterized the period. The unveiling of the Giugiaro Miura Concept serves as a poignant reminder of the rich tapestry of automotive design history. It highlights the collaborative and often complex processes behind iconic vehicles and pays tribute to the enduring impact of Giorgetto Giugiaro’s contributions to automotive design. This one-off model not only celebrates a personal milestone but also enriches the narrative of Lamborghini’s design evolution.
