01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Jaguar 3.8 S Frua was a one-off coupé designed and built by Carrozzeria Pietro Frua in 1966 on the chassis of the Jaguar S-Type 3.8. The rolling chassis was supplied by Jaguar in December 1965 to Frua’s studio in Turin through the Milan importer Fattori & Montani. The completed car was presented on Frua’s stand at the 1966 Geneva Motor Show. Unlike the production S-Type saloon, Frua created an entirely new two-door body with seating for four passengers. The design retained Jaguar’s mechanical platform but introduced a cleaner and more restrained interpretation influenced by contemporary Italian GTs. The front featured four circular headlamps integrated into a full-width grille, while the bonnet incorporated a subtle central power bulge. The flanks were almost flat, interrupted only by a light shoulder line and a gentle crease at the base of the doors. The roofline flowed into a short, horizontal tail with large wraparound rear window and slim pillars, providing good visibility. At the rear, the horizontal tail lamps were recessed into a simple panel, while the bumper followed the clean lines of the body. The interior retained Jaguar’s wood dashboard and mechanical components but was finished with bespoke leather upholstery and trim by Frua. The car remained powered by Jaguar’s 3.8-litre XK inline-six, coupled to the standard drivetrain and suspension of the S-Type. The Jaguar 3.8 S Frua was conceived as a styling exercise rather than a production proposal. Although it demonstrated the potential of combining British engineering with Italian coachbuilding, the project remained a unique example and no further cars were built. The one-off is representative of Pietro Frua’s work during the mid-1960s, when he regularly reinterpreted production chassis from European manufacturers as exclusive grand touring coupés. It also forms part of a series of Frua-designed Jaguars that explored alternative styling themes outside the official Jaguar design programme.
