01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Itala Tipo 50 Coupé de Ville bodied by Carrozzeria Bertone in the early 1920s exemplifies the transitional period of European automobile design, wherein formal carriage-derived styling merged with modern mechanical principles. Itala, founded in 1904 in Turin, was known for its pre-war racing achievements and subsequently adapted its engineering prowess to create refined touring cars for private clientele in the post-war period. The Tipo 50, introduced shortly after World War I, reflected this shift, offering a chassis suitable for a range of luxury and sporting applications. Powered by a four-cylinder monobloc engine with a displacement of 2,813 cubic centimetres (bore and stroke: 83 x 130 mm), the Tipo 50 produced between 45 and 50 horsepower depending on configuration. The powertrain included a four-speed manual gearbox and was paired with mechanical rear-wheel drive. Suspension was by semi-elliptical leaf springs front and rear, with braking accomplished through mechanically actuated drum brakes on both axles. The chassis’ dimensions allowed for a relatively long wheelbase of approximately 3,100 mm, enabling ample coachbuilding flexibility. This specific Coupé de Ville body was executed by Carrozzeria Bertone, founded in 1912 and by the early 1920s beginning to establish a distinctive identity within Italy’s growing coachbuilding sector. The design adhered to the classical coupé de ville typology, with an enclosed passenger compartment and an open driver’s section, often separated by a partition. The upright roofline, modest ornamentation, and restrained curvature of the rear body reflected the conservative elegance typical of luxury transport in the immediate post-war period. The body was constructed with hand-formed panels over a wooden frame, using traditional coachbuilding methods. Production numbers for the Tipo 50 series remain undocumented in detail, though overall Itala output in the early 1920s was modest. The Bertone-bodied Coupé de Ville is considered a one-off or part of a very limited series. Surviving examples of coachbuilt Italas from this period are rare.
