01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Itala landaulet known as Palombella was constructed in 1907 on a chassis related to the model used in the Peking to Paris endurance event. The vehicle was commissioned for Queen Margherita of Savoy and was bodied by Cesare Sala of Milan. The layout follows the landaulet typology, featuring an open driver’s compartment and an enclosed passenger cabin. This format was typical for state and ceremonial use during the early 20th century, allowing for visibility of the rear occupants during official functions. The chassis is derived from the Itala long-wheelbase touring platform, modified for formal service with additions such as twin brake pedals, which provided independent control of different braking systems. The body was executed in black with a folding rear canopy section. Access to the rear compartment was facilitated by a retractable step integrated under the sill. The doors are fitted with silver handles shaped in the form of stylized eagles, a decorative element consistent with royal insignia. The construction materials include a timber frame overlaid with metal panels. Lighting is provided by acetylene lanterns mounted on either side of the windshield frame. The mechanical components, including the engine, drivetrain, and suspension, are representative of Itala production standards of the period, though adapted for lower-speed ceremonial transport rather than long-distance competition. Palombella represents a reuse of existing chassis architecture for non-commercial, high-protocol purposes. It retains the mechanical specification of a contemporary touring car but is equipped for limited-distance operation in urban or controlled environments. The body design by Cesare Sala aligns with early 20th-century Italian ceremonial automotive practices. The vehicle remains a documented example of early automotive adaptation for royal service, utilizing proven mechanical components combined with custom-built formal coachwork.
