01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Isotta Fraschini TM 1 Torpedo by Carrozzeria Castagna is a four-seat open automobile constructed on the TM 1 chassis, introduced by Isotta Fraschini in the early 1910s. The TM 1 platform, typical of the brand’s early engineering direction, featured a large-displacement four-cylinder engine and was developed for reliability and long-distance touring. Its mechanical layout was conventional for the period, with a ladder frame, leaf-sprung suspension, and rear-wheel drive. The body, executed by Milan-based coachbuilder Castagna, adopts the torpedo configuration, a body style characterized by its long hood, straight beltline, and low-profile windshield. One of the defining technical features of this example is the retractable soft top, which folds cleanly behind the passenger compartment. This design offered improved weather protection while maintaining the open character of the bodywork when retracted. A notable visual detail is the painted beltline treatment: a contrasting color strip begins at the curve of the scuttle (the crossmember below the windshield) and descends along the sides to follow the perimeter of the car’s midsection. This element was used to define the profile and emphasize the beltline’s horizontal flow, contributing to the vehicle’s overall proportions without altering the structure. The TM 1 Torpedo Castagna reflects a typical collaborative approach between Italian chassis manufacturers and coachbuilders in the early automotive era. While few TM 1 examples survive, this configuration demonstrates the application of period design standards and the gradual transition toward more integrated body-chassis systems. The car remains representative of early Italian touring models produced before World War I.
