01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8A, completed in 1926 with coachwork by Carrozzeria Cesare Sala, represents an early bespoke application of Isotta Fraschini’s most advanced luxury chassis. Identified by chassis number 1020, the car was produced during the initial phase of Tipo 8A manufacture, at a time when the Milanese marque was consolidating its position at the top of the European luxury automobile market. Introduced in 1924, the Tipo 8A was engineered as a flagship platform and supplied exclusively as a rolling chassis to independent coachbuilders. It was powered by a 7,370 cc inline eight-cylinder engine with overhead valves and an aluminium crankcase. Designed for smoothness and sustained high-speed touring, the engine produced approximately 115 horsepower in early specifications. Power was transmitted through a three-speed manual gearbox to a live rear axle. The chassis incorporated four-wheel servo-assisted mechanical drum brakes, semi-elliptic leaf springs front and rear, and a long wheelbase suitable for large open and closed bodies. Suspension tuning prioritized ride comfort and directional stability over sporting response. Cesare Sala’s coachwork for chassis 1020 followed contemporary luxury touring conventions. The body was constructed using traditional methods, with a wooden frame clothed in hand-formed metal panels. Proportions emphasized a long bonnet, a clearly defined passenger compartment, and flowing fenders, conveying both presence and refinement. Decorative elements were restrained, consistent with Sala’s disciplined approach to luxury bodies intended for private clients rather than exhibition excess. The overall layout balanced aesthetic form with mechanical reliability, aligning with Isotta Fraschini’s engineering philosophy. Interior execution was tailored to the commissioning client’s requirements, with attention to comfort, materials, and finish, typical of bespoke Italian coachbuilding of the mid-1920s. Chassis 1020 is documented as a one-off execution, with no identical Tipo 8A Sala bodies recorded. Period sources indicate that the car was exhibited at contemporary automotive events, where it served to demonstrate both the technical sophistication of the Tipo 8A chassis and Sala’s coachbuilding capability.
