01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8A chassis 1135 bodied by Carrozzeria Cesare Sala was not merely an automobile—it was a statement wrapped in lacquered elegance and whispering silk. Clad in a Sedanca de Ville coachwork, this motorcar was born in Milan, 1929, into a world that still believed luxury could be eternal. Commissioned by Franco Pacchetti, a gentleman of refined sensibility, it was as much a gesture as a possession—each curve, each stitch, a signature of Milanese grace. But fate, as ever, had its own roads to travel. Not long after, the car crossed into a new life, acquired by a young royal: Sajid Hussain, the Raja of Kotwara, who, far from his princely homeland, was studying under Edinburgh’s grey skies. There, among stone towers and scholarly quiet, the Isotta glided—a gleaming anomaly of the East and West, of empire and elegance. Locals whispered of the car and its enigmatic driver; the Raja, wrapped in wool and dreams, behind the wheel of a Milanese masterpiece. By 1932, cap and gown had replaced lecture halls and handwritten notes. With his graduation from Edinburgh University, the Raja chose a path few could: he would return home. But not alone. The Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8A 1135 would accompany him—a companion now, not just a car. Through ports and railways, it sailed southward, its polished form reflecting shifting skies. In India, it would become more than a vehicle. It would be a memory machine, a moving echo of cobblestone streets and European winters, of conversations in cafés and lectures in cloistered halls. A car once born for promenades in Milan was now destined for palace gates and dusted roads lined with neem and marigold. And through it all, it remained what it had always been—resolutely, regally, itself.
