01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Hafei Zhongyi is a cabover microvan produced by the Chinese manufacturer Hafei Motor, developed in partnership with the renowned design house Pininfarina. This collaboration resulted in a vehicle that balances functionality with a distinctive design. The Zhongyi is marketed in Brazil and Uruguay under the brand Effa Motors and made its debut at the 1999 Beijing Motor Show. In December 2007, the Zhongyi was launched in Chile, accompanied by the Ruiyi and Lobo models. This move tapped into a long-standing appreciation for microvans in Chile, which were extremely popular in the late 1970s and 1980s, often referred to locally as “pan de molde” (sliced bread) due to their boxy shape and practicality. The introduction of the Zhongyi in Chile aimed to revive this nostalgic segment with a modern twist, offering versatility for both commercial and personal use. The Zhongyi also found its way to the United States, where it was sold as a utility van by MAG International Inc. under the name “C-MAG.” This version catered to the demand for compact, efficient utility vehicles in the American market, highlighting the Zhongyi’s adaptability and international appeal. Designed with practicality in mind, the Zhongyi features a cabover layout that maximizes interior space within its compact dimensions. This makes it an ideal choice for urban environments where maneuverability and space efficiency are crucial. The collaboration with Pininfarina ensured that the Zhongyi not only served its functional purpose but also carried a distinctive and attractive design, setting it apart from other microvans. The Hafei Zhongyi’s international journey—from its origins in China to its presence in South American and North American markets—demonstrates its versatile appeal. It stands as a testament to the successful blend of Chinese manufacturing capabilities and Italian design expertise, meeting the diverse needs of consumers across different regions. In conclusion, the Hafei Zhongyi is more than just a microvan; it’s a global vehicle that embodies practical design and international collaboration, continuing to serve various markets with its unique blend of efficiency, style, and utility.
