01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Ford Mustang Bertone emerged from a unique collaboration initiated by Scott Bailey in 1965. Bailey, the publisher of the esteemed “Automobile Quarterly,” sought to showcase Bertone’s design prowess by inviting them to reimagine the iconic Ford Mustang. This endeavor aimed to demonstrate that the Turin-based school of bodywork designers could excel in crafting designs for automobiles outside their typical scope. Unveiled for the first time at the 1965 New York International Automobile Show, the Ford Mustang Bertone captivated audiences with its distinctive interpretation of the American classic. Bertone’s vision featured a radiator grille prominently adorned with the emblem of the original Mustang, while the retractable headlamps remained concealed behind the grille, adding an element of intrigue to the design. Although the body panels and glasshouse remained faithful to the original Mustang, Bertone introduced subtle modifications to distinguish their creation. These included a smaller fuel cap and an interior re-upholstered in “cowhide-like” vinyl, evoking a sense of luxury and refinement. The inclusion of 14-inch Campagnolo wheels, crafted from Elektron magnesium alloy and outfitted with Pirelli Cinturato tires, further enhanced the Mustang’s aesthetic appeal and performance capabilities. The Ford Mustang Bertone’s debut was met with resounding acclaim, earning the prestigious Best of Show accolade at the 1965 New York International Auto Show. However, despite its success on the show circuit, practical considerations arose regarding the usability of the magnesium wheels for everyday driving. Consequently, Road & Track’s Stephen P. Wilder, the fortunate recipient of Bertone’s masterpiece, opted to replace the wheels with standard Mustang variants. Bertone’s reimagining of the Ford Mustang proved to be another triumph in the designer’s illustrious portfolio, showcasing their ability to infuse iconic American models with a distinctly European flair. This collaboration underscored Bertone’s status as a trailblazer in automotive design, further solidifying their reputation as innovators in the industry.
