01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Fiat Rovelli 1100 Testadoro Spider Hardtop is a singular example of post-war Italian automotive engineering and design, constructed in 1947. Based upon the Fiat 1100 chassis, this vehicle reflects a transitional period in European motoring when competition and craftsmanship began to reemerge after the devastations of the Second World War. Commissioned by the Milanese dealer Antonio Rovelli and bodied by the coachbuilder Carrozzeria Castagna, the car presents a unique collaboration between industrial manufacture and artisanal construction. Its mechanical foundation derives from the Fiat 1100, a model already known for its balance of performance and reliability. However, the Testadoro variant incorporated specific enhancements, most notably a bronze cylinder head developed by engineer Arnaldo Roselli. Known as the “Testadoro” or “golden head,” this component contributed not only to the car’s performance but also to its name. The head, manufactured by the Turin-based firm GR, served as a lightweight and efficient alternative to traditional cast iron designs, offering improved thermal conductivity and contributing to a modest increase in power output. The body of the Rovelli Testadoro was constructed in lightweight aluminum with fluid, aerodynamic lines characteristic of Italian design in the late 1940s. The detachable hardtop adds a functional and aesthetic dimension, allowing the vehicle to serve both as an open barchetta and a closed coupe. Designed by Giuseppe Seregni, the form is elegant yet purposeful, with minimal ornamentation and a focus on proportion and aerodynamic flow. Despite being a one-off, the car holds historical significance through its participation in contemporary motorsport. It competed in the 1947 Mille Miglia and the Coppa d’Oro delle Dolomiti, driven by privateer teams. These appearances attest to its intended role not merely as a showpiece but as a genuine racing vehicle. Preserved as an isolated example, the Fiat Rovelli 1100 Testadoro Spider Hardtop occupies a unique position in the annals of Italian automotive history. It represents an intersection of postwar innovation, coachbuilt artistry, and motorsport ambition, and stands as a testament to a brief yet influential moment when engineering ingenuity met the expressive spirit of Italian design.

Specification notes
USER-SUPPLIED RESEARCH NOTE 2026-09-23 — Ing. Nino Rovelli was a friend and Politecnico di Milano schoolmate of Ing. Carlo Felice Bianchi Anderloni. After the war Rovelli acquired a complete BMW 328 chassis and engine and obtained from Touring a body developed for the planned 1941 Berlin–Rome event. The car was completed by a carrozzeria in Castellanza; some sources also attribute development work to Colli. After a race at Piacenza it was modified by Volpini, who transferred the German mechanical components to a Fiat 1100 chassis with a siluro body. During 1947–48 it was modified again by Volpini and Colli and, after a race at Vercelli, sold to Clocchiatti. This BMW/Volpini sequence is contextual to Rovelli and is distinct from chassis 0039147. USER-SUPPLIED RESEARCH NOTE 2026-09-23 — Another Rovelli creation was this Fiat 1100 barchetta, chassis 0039147, with Testadoro engine and Castagna body. It raced the Mille Miglia with Ghiringhelli–Galli and was later raced by Giulio Cabianca. Treat the Castagna body/Testadoro configuration and competition associations as supplied research pending source-level reconciliation; do not conflate this car with Rovelli's separate BMW 328-derived/Volpini project.
