01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Fiat 508 Balilla Royal Coupé by Castagna was a one-off coachbuilt automobile executed in Milan circa 1933. Based on the standard Fiat 508 Balilla chassis introduced in 1932, the vehicle was bodied by Carrozzeria Castagna, a firm established in 1849 and known for its association with upper-tier custom coachwork on Italian and European platforms. The Royal Coupé represented an attempt to apply formal stylistic elements to Fiat’s mass-produced small-displacement car. The Fiat 508 chassis employed a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive configuration with a steel ladder frame, rigid front and rear axles, semi-elliptic leaf springs, and mechanical drum brakes. The power unit was a 995 cc inline four-cylinder side-valve engine, water-cooled, producing approximately 20 horsepower at 3,500 rpm. It was mated to a three-speed manual transmission in early production, with a four-speed version introduced in later series. Performance figures were modest, with a top speed near 80 km/h, suitable for urban and light touring use. The Castagna body was constructed in steel over a wooden subframe, adhering to the formal proportions of a fixed-roof two-door coupé. Design features included a high beltline, upright windscreen, integrated rear quarter glazing, external running boards, and recessed lighting fixtures. The overall execution reflected Castagna’s traditional coachbuilding language, characterized by clean volumes, minimal decorative elements, and an emphasis on upright formality. Interior trim was tailored, though modest in material specification due to the compact dimensions and underlying mechanical base. Only one example of the Fiat 508 Balilla Royal Coupé by Castagna is known to have been constructed. No production records or body numbers have been publicly released, and no factory commission data survives. The vehicle was reportedly displayed at coachbuilder showcases in Milan and possibly Turin during the mid-1930s. No further documentation exists regarding its post-exhibition history, and no confirmed examples reside in public collections. The Royal Coupé remains a singular expression of prewar Italian coachbuilding applied to a light industrial platform. It reflects a period when luxury styling could still be rendered, in limited instances, on the smallest mechanical bases through bespoke commissions. Its historical presence survives primarily through period imagery and coachbuilder archives.
