01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Fiat 500 Albarella by Carrozzeria Savio was a limited-production open leisure vehicle developed between 1967 and 1969. It was based on the Fiat 500 F platform and built in Turin by Carrozzeria Savio, known for its special-bodied vehicles derived from Fiat mechanical components. The model was named after the island of Albarella in the Venetian lagoon, and it was intended for seasonal, resort-area use. The Albarella belongs to the category of “spiaggine,” or beach cars, which saw popularity in post-war Italy for coastal transportation. The mechanical underpinnings remained standard to the 500 F series. The engine was a rear-mounted, air-cooled, two-cylinder unit with a displacement of 499 cc, producing between 18 and 22 horsepower. The vehicle employed a four-speed manual gearbox and rear-wheel-drive configuration. Suspension consisted of independent setups at both front and rear, with coil springs. Drum brakes were fitted on all four wheels. Performance characteristics were modest, with a top speed near 80 km/h under optimal conditions. The Albarella received a modified steel body structure executed by Savio. The roof, doors, and much of the side structure were removed. A simple folding canvas top provided minimal weather protection. Seating was reconfigured with wicker-lined seats, a typical stylistic and functional choice for open holiday cars of the period. External features included exposed wheels, a revised rear section with squared-off bodywork, and a front-mounted spare wheel. Interior instrumentation and trim were retained in basic form from the standard Fiat 500. Production was limited to approximately 20 units, with no evidence of serialized manufacturing. The cars were likely built to order or in small batches for private clients and hospitality industry use. One recorded chassis, numbered 1727461, was documented in auction sale records in the early 21st century. The Fiat 500 Albarella by Savio reflects a period-specific adaptation of a mass-market vehicle into a specialized form for leisure and resort environments. Its low production volume, ephemeral use, and distinctive construction situate it within the broader history of Italian coachbuilt beach cars of the 1960s. Surviving examples are scarce, and documented provenance is limited.
